You know it, and tourists know it, as the “city of big shoulders”, ‘the windy city”, or “the city that works”. Everyone knows about Navy Pier, the Field Museum, Millennium Park, and the Bean. Nearly every single pictorial guide to Chicago showcases our famous Loop..our towering, glassy high-rises, the Chicago River, Lake Shore Drive at night…
But what don’t we know? Of all the bright lights in this big city, there’s so much we’re not casting a glow on. There are approximately 230 ‘neighborhoods’ shining with intricacies. From hipster cafes to regal party rooms, from classical architecture to modern European sleekness…our intent is to illuminate the oft-overlooked parts of this beautiful city through visuals : photography and conceptual design.
That’s where you come in. We’re looking for well-loved, but perhaps not so well-known, places to be photographed artistically for our project. And not just bars and restaurants — bookstores, boutiques, specialty stores of any kind, parks, outdoor landmarks, small businesses, homes, apartment/condo buildings. Interiors and exteriors.
We’re also looking to photograph groups and organizations doing what they do. So if you’ve got a salsa dancing group or a british 19th-century novel-reading group or a political group, we might want to talk to you. And photograph you.
Please feel free to share such people and places! You can email your suggestions/thoughts/comments/favorite places to photometricchicago@gmail.com And we’d love it if you’d pass the word along to friends and share this website with them, too. Oh, and if you’d like to participate in any aspect of the project, let us know!
